HF vs UHF: The RFID choice most libraries don’t know they’re making

If your library has security gates, a self-service kiosk, or tags inside the covers of your books, the likelihood is you already use RFID. Did you know, though, that “library RFID” isn’t just one technology? 

There are two distinct generations of it, and one has been the default for years. Nobody sits down with a librarian or library team and asks which one they would like, so if frequency never came up when you bought your system, you got the default: whatever the supplier fitted as standard.

The two are named after the radio frequency they use: HF and UHF. The difference comes down to the shape of the field the reader creates.

High Frequency (HF): One short-read field

HF is the generation most UK libraries have, well proven and widely installed.

It works by close coupling. The reader creates a small magnetic field and a tag has to be inside it to respond. It reads several items together quite happily; a stack on a kiosk pad or a handful of books through a set of security gates. However, the field is small and drops away sharply at its edges.

That cuts both ways. The read zone is contained and predictable, staying exactly where it was built. But everything has to be brought to it: items presented to a pad or kiosk, pedestals framing the doorway, and shelf checks walked with the reader held close to the spines.

Ultra High Frequency (UHF): Two read fields

UHF has been a mainstream RFID choice in retail, logistics and asset tracking for the better part of two decades, and it has been going into UK libraries since 2017. So, this is the next-generation choice for libraries, rather than an unproven one. Its real advantage isn’t distance; it’s that it works in two different modes using the same tag.

Up close, within a few centimetres, a UHF reader can behave much like HF: a tight, contained field for a desk, kiosk or returns unit.

Further out, it switches mechanism entirely, and this is the part HF cannot do at all. One reader covers an area rather than an aperture, so a whole entrance can be read from a ceiling panel with nothing standing in the doorway.

On the shelves, stocktakes get much quicker. Staff still walk the aisles, but with the power turned up, a handheld reads whole shelves at a time instead of tracking along the spines. Turned down, it will track a single item to its exact location. It can also tell you whether an item is anywhere in a room, which is often the real question.

And no, it doesn’t read the whole building. The read zone is engineered through power, antenna design, mounting geometry and signal filtering, so it covers its specified footprint and stops there.

Why this matters to you, not just your supplier

For most librarians and library teams, this only becomes important at one of two moments:

  1. Buying a library security system or self-service solution for the first time, or 
  2. Replacing a system at end of life. 

At that point, you’re choosing the generation you’ll live with for a decade or more. It’s far easier to decide deliberately than to try to unpick this choice later.

So, one ask… Find out which flavour of RFID you’re using.
