How PSP worked with the Medway NHS Foundation Trust library team to design a bespoke eRLS stock control, self-service and smart returns bin solution

PSP Asset Protection started working with Richard Pemberton, the Knowledge & Library Services Strategic Manager at the Medway NHS Foundation Trust, back in May 2022. We started with a new eRLS stock control system with self-service for the Medway Maritime NHS staff library and followed up with the installation of a smart returns bin. The returns bin is a brand-new product that requires no interaction with the user – they simply ‘slide and go’ and the book is automatically returned to the library system and removed from their account.

Richard was deeply involved in the specification of the smart returns bin and as something of a pioneer for us in the NHS library space, we were very keen to catch up with him a few months on to see how the new system is bedding in and to get his thoughts on his experience working with us.

Did you switch or upgrade your library management system from a previous supplier?

No, this is the first stock control and self-service product for this library.

What was the reason for introducing the new library stock control system and what was the process like?

We wanted to move the library to 24-hour opening and it would be unstaffed overnight. We wanted a solution that allowed self-service book loans and returns while allowing us to keep track of our collection.

How have PSP’s solutions made managing your library more efficient?

The PSP stock control solution provided the means to open our book room 24/7. The added value came from users self-serving during staffed hours allowing staff to spend time on more in-depth library management tasks.

Do you have a favourite feature that makes library life easier?

The bespoke smart returns unit certainly makes the most of our limited space!
