National Storytelling Week 2025: Reimagine Your World

Inspiring Young Minds in School Libraries

National Storytelling Week (NSW), organised by the National Literacy Trust and supported by Amazon, is celebrated every year in the first week of February (Saturday 1st to Sunday 9th) and aims to highlight the power of storytelling to spark creativity and connection.

The 2025 theme, “Reimagine Your World”, invites students to think beyond their experiences and explore new ideas. As the NSW website says, “The most extraordinary story can come from the most ordinary place: it just needs someone to find it!”

For school librarians, NSW is a chance to engage students, foster imagination and inspire positive change. Sharing stories not only helps young learners relax and escape, but it also helps to develop essential literacy skills. Stories teach us about the world; they allow us to step into someone else’s shoes and feel empathy.

Why “Reimagine Your World”?

The theme challenges students to reconsider the stories they encounter and how they see the world. Librarians can help students explore new perspectives through diverse stories that inspire creativity, empathy and change.

Ways School Librarians Can Celebrate National Storytelling Week:

  1. Diverse Storytelling Sessions
Host sessions featuring stories from different cultures, speculative fiction or biographies of changemakers to expose students to varied perspectives and challenge traditional narratives.
  2. Interactive Workshops
Encourage students to create their own stories through workshops like story writing, digital storytelling and drama or puppet performances. This helps students actively engage with the theme of reimagining their world.
  3. Themed Book Displays & Reading Lists
Curate book displays around speculative fiction, visionary non-fiction and reimagined classics. These books can spark new ideas and discussions about possibilities for the future.
  4. Storytelling Competitions
Organise a competition where students reimagine traditional tales or create speculative stories. The winners can share their work in a special event or online.

How to Get Involved

National Storytelling Week is an opportunity for school librarians to guide students in exploring new ideas on a specific theme, which helps to expand the horizons of young learners and allows them to imagine a better future. Through creative storytelling, students can be inspired to think critically, dream big and help shape the world around them.

We encourage you to explore the NSW website where you will find useful resources and you can also sign up for National Storytelling Week workshops, including FREE, interactive, online writing workshops with expert storytellers!
